Kikiam or Quekiam is a popular Filipino street food that has Chinese origins. We usually have them as snacks together with fishballs, squid balls, and kwek- kwek. It’s basically mixed pork, seafood, and spices wrapped in bean curd.

If you love street foods, there is a big chance you are already familiar with Kikiam. However, most that are sold by street vendors are already highly processed and lacks some of the original ingredients.

This recipe will show you how the original or traditional Kikiam is made. I’m sure you will enjoy the taste as it will definitely taste better than the ones you are used to. Try making them today!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 lb ground pork
  • ½ lb shrimp, minced
  • 1 medium carrot, minced
  • 1 medium onion, minced
  • 1 tbsp five spice powder
  • 2 tbsp salt
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (diluted in 2 tbsp water)
  • 6 pcs bean curd sheets (tau pe)
  • 1 cup cooking oil

HOW TO COOK:

  1. Combine pork, shrimp, carrot, onion, five spice powder, salt, and pepper in a large mixing bowl and mix well.
  2. Lay a piece of bean curd sheet flat on a table.
  3. Scoop a decent amount of the mixture and arrange it at one end of the bean curd sheet.
  4. Fold the top and bottom ends of the bean curd sheets and then roll the sides until a sausage-like figure is formed.
  5. Dip your fingers in the diluted cornstarch and run it on the end of the bean curd sheet (this will help secure the kikiam).
  6. Prepare the steamer by pouring 4 cups of water and letting it boil.
  7. Arrange the kikiam in the steamer and then steam for 20 to 25 minutes.
  8. Remove from the steamer and then set aside.
  9. Heat the cooking oil in a pan.
  10. Pan fry the kikiam until the wrapper turns golden brown.
  11. Remove from the pan and then slice into serving pieces. Enjoy!
